Winter Financial Aid Application Now Available

The application for the winter 2022 – 2023 term is now available. The deadline to complete the winter financial aid application is January 12, 2023.

To apply for financial aid for the winter 2022-2023 term, you must have submitted a 2022-2023 FAFSA and be registered for both a winter 2022-2023 term course and the spring 2023 term. (Please note, if you are completing your undergraduate degree requirements at the end of fall 2022, you will not be eligible for financial aid for winter 2022-2023). If you are receiving a waiver for winter, anticipate it being applied to your account in the winter semester. If you are applying for a loan for winter, you should anticipate its disbursement when spring aid is applied.

For the winter term, the primary source of aid is in the form of loans, such as any remaining Federal Direct Subsidized or Unsubsidized loans, Parent/Graduate PLUS loans, or private loans.

Student Debt Relief

On October 17, 2022, President Biden announced that the Department of Education’s (ED) application for student loan cancellation is open and ready for eligible borrowers to fill out.

Qualifying students and graduates may receive up to $10,000 in loan forgiveness or up to $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients.  Students can check their student aid history, including loan balances and Pell Grant recipient status by logging in to their federal student aid account on studentaid.gov

Additional information about qualifying and the application can be found at:  https://studentaid.gov/debt-relief/application. Please note that applications cannot be submitted through the University of Illinois. You must apply at https://studentaid.gov/debt-relief/application by December 31, 2023.

Scam Alert: Please be aware that student loan forgiveness scams are on the rise. If you get an email, letter or call about student loan debt forgiveness, pause before providing any personal information. Federal programs do not require payment for loan forgiveness. If completing the application, be certain that you are on the secure studentaid.gov website.

The pause in student loan repayment and interest that began in March 2020 has been extended one last time to December 31, 2022.  If you would like to be notified by the U.S. Department of Education when additional information is available, please sign up at the Department of Education subscription page.
