Welcome to the Office of Student Financial Aid

Our goal is to assist you and your family in securing the resources necessary to fund your education. Last year, over one billion dollars in financial aid funds were administered and 67% of students received financial aid.

2024-2025 General FAFSA Update

Due to issues that the Department of Education has identified with some of the previously submitted FAFSAs, OSFA will begin creating Financial Aid Notifications for newly admitted students with FAFSAs that the Department of Education has identified as NOT needing to be reprocessed beginning in mid- to late April, and will follow with packaging the students whose FAFSAs DO need to be processed once we receive those updated records. That means that some newly admitted students may see financial aid offers beginning in mid- to late April, and others in early May once we have received the updated and correct FAFSA data from the Department of Education. We continue to aim for mid-May packaging for continuing/returning students. Please keep in mind, your eligibility for aid is based on the date that the FAFSA was completed, NOT the date that we receive a corrected or reprocessed FAFSA!

Please note as well that the Department of Education has advised that FAFSA corrections will be available “early in the week” of April 15, if the student or a student’s contributor need to provide a signature, consent, the UIUC school code, etc.

Newly Admitted Students & Financial Aid

Congratulations on your recent admission to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. As long as you have already completed the 2024-2025 Free Application for Federal Student Aid or Alternative Application and included our school code (001775), there is nothing additional you need to do at this time. Once the Office of Student Financial Aid has received and reviewed your FAFSA, you can find confirmation in the Financial Aid section of your ‘Newly Admitted Student Checklist,’ available through your MyIllini account.

As a result of processing delays from the Department of Education, students who were not required to submit additional documentation and those who have all their documents completed will begin receiving their Financial Aid Notifications in mid-April at the earliest. Your Financial Aid Notification will outline the aid you qualify for based on your FAFSA or Alternative Application, including grants, scholarships, Federal Work-Study, and/or loans.

We understand your concerns regarding the current financial aid delays, and we’re sorry this is happening! We’re committed to minimizing the impact on you and your family. The preferential deadline for FAFSA has been extended to April 15. If you have any questions in the meantime, please don’t hesitate to contact the Office of Student Financial Aid directly.

Continuing/Returning Students and FAFSA Delays

The OSFA preferential deadline has been extended to April 15 for all institutional aid programs for 2024-2025. We understand that the FAFSA process may have been more difficult than what you’re used to, and we’re sorry. Due to the processing delays from the Department of Education, and because newly admitted students have to make an admission decision by May 15, OSFA will begin creating 2024-2025 Financial Aid Notifications for continuing students starting, at the earliest, in mid-May.

Summer Financial Aid Application – Due June 14

The application for the summer 2024 term is available here: Summer Financial Aid Application. To apply for financial aid for summer 2024 term, you must have submitted a 2023-2024 FAFSA, and will need to be registered for summer term courses. To qualify for aid for summer, you must be enrolled at least half-time (undergraduate 6 hours and graduate 3 hours.) Please note that if you are completing your degree requirements at the end of spring 2024 you will not be eligible for financial aid for summer 2024.

The primary source of aid is in the form of loans, such as any remaining Federal Direct Subsidized or Unsubsidized loans, Parent/Graduate Plus loans, or private loans. Summer financial aid is disbursed roughly one week before your summer classes begin; however, tuition and fee billing may begin in early May.

May 13 course start: aid applied beginning Monday, May 6
June 10 course start: aid applied beginning Monday, June 10
July 8 course start: aid applied beginning Monday, July 1
